With an effective tax rate of 0.65 percent, the District of Columbia has the eighth lowest tax rate among U.S. states and the district, according to an ATTOM Data Solutions analysis of property taxes levied on single-family homes. 

The data shows the District of Columbia has more than 48,000 single-family homes with an average estimated value of more than $789,000. The average tax amount is about $5,100. The effective tax rate is the percentage of a home's value the owner pays in property taxes.

New Jersey, Illinois, Vermont, Texas, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania have the highest effective tax rates – all above 2 percent. Twenty-four states have effective tax rates below 1 percent.

New Jersey homeowners pay an effective tax rate of 2.28 percent, ranking it the highest in the U.S. District of Columbia homeowners pay 71 percent less than they would in New Jersey.
